GPS technologies, Geotagging and Social media are increasingly becoming a part of our everyday life, introducing an exciting realm for new experiences. ‘Places’ is a design-led investigation in particular set out to bring new understanding of time-based activities such as way finding.
The scope of this research is not necessarily about how to find the most efficient and direct route between destinations but rather the most compelling and memorable, celebrating the joy of exploration, discovery and sharing.
The open-ended experience prototyping/research environment ‘places’ (built with a glass ball, a mini-projector, digital cameras and a wirelessly connected computer) revolves around the symbolic meaning of the crystal ball.
While spanning topics such as displacement without transformation and transportation by deformation (intermediaries and mediations) and how we want to involve our social network in forecasting events and influencing behavior as we navigate through physical space, this research is in particular focused on understanding lived experience and the practical concerns of everyday life.

While relying on people-centered, participatory principles and an experience-led, practice-based, research through design approach, the design artifact constitutes an important part of the research as an object for interaction, a hub for creative activities to evolve around and a catalyst for engaging participants in interdisciplinary conversations. It is about leaving the office or laboratory, going out in the field, inviting people to come together to co-create ideas and try them out in practice.
While bringing forth new understandings of our experiences of space, place and non-place, these sessions gained multiple cultural, philosophical and ideological perspectives serving as valuable inspiration when designing for future services and experiences.
